The Coaching Manual and Greenisland FC present an evening of youth football insight with Manchester United Academy Legend Tony Whelan.
Join us on Sunday, March 23rd, as Manchester United Academy legend Tony Whelan headlines an exclusive evening of youth football insight at Greenisland FC’s Glenkeen Avenue facility, BT38 8S.
This unmissable event will focus on player engagement and a coach’s duty to nurture both the footballer and the person. Supported by TCM’s UEFA A Licence and Premier League Academy coaches, the evening includes a session and presentation from Whelan—one of the most respected figures in youth development, who helped launch the careers of 97 academy graduates at Manchester United.
About Tony Whelan
A former Manchester United youth player in the late ’60s, Whelan shared the pitch with George Best and worked with icons like Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Matt Busby, and Sir Alex Ferguson. His playing career spanned Manchester City, Rochdale, and top NASL teams before he transitioned into coaching.
After earning his coaching badges at Lilleshall and a brief stint as a social worker, Whelan returned to Manchester United in 1990, invited back by Brian Kidd and Nobby Stiles. Since then, he’s shaped generations of young talent, balancing elite development with player well-being.
Why Attend?
Chris Barton, Founder of The Coaching Manual, emphasises the impact coaches have:
“A coach can be the reason a player loves the game for life—or walks away. That’s why engaging, player-focused coaching is key. This event is a unique chance to learn from one of the best in the business.”
Marc Gamble, Head of Football at Greenisland FC, adds:
“This collaboration with The Coaching Manual reflects our commitment to developing both coaches and players. We’re excited to offer a valuable learning experience to benefit the wider football community.”
